What separates the best AI packing list generators becomes clear after they produce the list. Do you want a quick checklist, a shared trip board, or a draft you can reshape through conversation? Those are three different jobs.
I compared PackSmart by Travel Vient, Wanderlog, and ChatGPT on September 16, 2026. The fictional Denver brief covered five days, carry-on travel, dinner, hiking, gym time, laundry, and a 5–20°C planning range. No personal information was used. This is one task-level test, not a permanent ranking.
Choose PackSmart when you want a fast, dedicated checklist without creating an account. Choose Wanderlog when the list should become an editable part of a shared trip plan. Choose ChatGPT when unusual constraints and repeated revisions matter more than a built-in packing screen.
No option wins every row. The right ai packing list app is the one that leaves you with the least awkward work after the first draft.
A generator can connect trip length, luggage, activities, laundry, and a planning temperature range. It can then suggest quantities and group items by purpose.
That is useful blank-page help. It is not proof that every item fits, works together, or belongs in your bag.
Only you know whether one pair of shoes can cover dinner, walking, and the gym. The same goes for rewearing clothes, access to laundry, sensory preferences, dress expectations, and items available at your accommodation.
The test made this gap visible. PackSmart's form captured Denver, dates, business travel, carry-on luggage, hiking, and fine dining. It could not accept gym time, laundry, the supplied range, or exclusions. The 41-item result in my test included medication and passport entries, the brief excluded. in my test Wanderlog and ChatGPT accepted the full brief and respected those exclusions.
Weather, baggage dimensions, security restrictions, and destination rules need separate checks. PackSmart says it uses forecasts for trips within 16 days and prior-year historical weather farther out. The page does not name its weather provider, so treat the range as planning context rather than a forecast you have independently confirmed.
For air travel, check your airline's current baggage page and the responsible security authority. The FAA PackSafe guidance also warns that security rules and dangerous-goods rules are separate, and carriers or international rules may be stricter. A travel packing list generator cannot approve an item for your flight.
This PackSmart is Travel Vient's tool, not another product with the same name. Its official PackSmart page lists destination, dates, trip type, luggage, traveler count, and preset activity fields.

The result behaved like a real checklist. I could tick items, see packed progress, reset the list, copy a share link, or export a PDF. The page says the latest list saves automatically in the browser. That makes PackSmart the lightest choice here for a one-off trip.
The trade-off is input control. You cannot explain an unusual wardrobe or request a laundry-based quantity change. Generated items appeared fixed apart from their checkboxes. PackSmart is quick precisely because it asks less.
Wanderlog treats packing as one part of a larger trip. I created a Denver plan, added the dates, and gave its AI Assistant the complete brief. It returned a categorized list with quantities, wear-in-transit items, packed items, and a laundry plan.
Then came the useful part: “Save this as a packing checklist in my trip plan” created an actual checklist. Each line had its own checkbox and editable text field in my test. That is much closer to ongoing trip coordination than a response you copy elsewhere.
The Wanderlog AI planner page documents packing checklists, collaboration, web planning, and mobile apps. Its free-plan help says trips and collaborators are not capped, though Pro covers some features. The test showed a limited free-message allowance, and the anonymous plan required sign-up to save.

ChatGPT accepted every sentence of the brief in one message. It separated transit clothes from packed items, used the supplied temperature range without calling it a forecast, and adjusted quantities around the laundry opportunity. Follow-up conversation is the easiest route when you want “one fewer pair of shoes” or “turn this into two shared lists.”
The logged-out page offered Copy and Share. Login was required to create and download files in my test environment. ChatGPT can be the most flexible packing list generator, but its first answer is a chat response, not a packing board.
OpenAI offers a Free ChatGPT plan with feature limits. Signed-in accounts have Data Controls. A Temporary Chat stays out of history and is not used to improve models, though OpenAI may retain a safety copy for up to 30 days. Avoid unnecessary booking codes or private details.

PackSmart is the simplest fit when preset fields describe the trip well. You get a checkable list, browser resume, link sharing, and a PDF without building a larger travel workspace.
If you would rather maintain your own reusable version, start with a packing list you can build and reuse. A manual master list is often easier to trust after several trips.
ChatGPT handles changing instructions most naturally. You can provide temperature ranges for each stop, ask for one shared capsule wardrobe, and revise quantities after the route changes. You still need to verify each range with the relevant official weather service closer to departure.
Wanderlog is the better choice when those revisions must remain attached to dates, reservations, notes, and a trip board. PackSmart's one-destination form is less suited to several climates.
Wanderlog has the clearest workflow. Put the checklist inside the shared trip, edit lines, and name responsibilities. Everyone sees the same current list instead of comparing screenshots.
PackSmart's share link is lighter, but it pre-fills the trip rather than creating the same shared editing space. ChatGPT can split a list by person, yet collaborators still need an agreed place to maintain the final version.
Use this short review before any generated list becomes your real list:
For a broader master inventory, use this reusable list of packing items and remove whole categories before adding trip-specific extras. A shorter trusted list is better than a clever one you stop reading.
Some can. PackSmart includes checkboxes and a packed counter, while Wanderlog can save AI output as an editable checklist inside a trip. The tested ChatGPT response used checkbox symbols, but they were not interactive packing controls. If progress tracking matters, verify that the generated draft becomes a persistent checklist rather than formatted text.
Do not assume list generation includes reminders. Neither PackSmart nor the tested Wanderlog checklist exposed a purchase-reminder control. ChatGPT supports scheduled tasks on eligible accounts, apps, and versions, according to its current task documentation, but that is separate from generating the packing list. Confirm notifications and timing before relying on them.

ChatGPT lists many supported interface languages in its language settings help. Wanderlog's current help page says its app and website are English-only, though a browser may translate parts of the interface. Travel Vient does not publish a PackSmart language-support list on the product page reviewed. Test both the form and generated output before committing.
PackSmart visibly offered PDF export and a share link, not CSV. Wanderlog created editable checklist lines and documents web printing, but its official help did not establish a packing-checklist spreadsheet export. ChatGPT's logged-out response could be copied; file creation and downloads required login in the tested interface. For a spreadsheet, request plain rows first and inspect them before importing.
The answer depends on the provider and the object deleted. The PackSmart page says the latest list is stored in the browser; I did not find server-side deletion details in the public materials reviewed. Wanderlog's privacy policy says account deletion removes associated data within two weeks; Deleting one checklist is not the same action. OpenAI's current retention policy says a deleted chat is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions. Check shared copies separately.
It can point you toward a rule, but it cannot give final clearance. Rules vary by item, security authority, carrier, country, battery rating, container size, and sometimes route. Check the current security authority and operating airline pages for the exact item. If the answer remains unclear, contact the airline or leave the item out.
The best AI packing list generators are not the ones that produce the longest lists. They are the ones that match how you will revise, share, and check the list before leaving. Pick one low-risk fictional trip, notice where the first draft becomes awkward, and let that friction choose the workflow.
